Adherence Marker Study

Volunteers Needed

Individuals are being recruited for a study on developing an adherence marker compound for tracking consumption of nutrient supplements. 

Interested individuals will be prescreened by phone using a prescreening questionnaire; those who may be eligible will be scheduled for an in-person screening visit at the Ragle Human Nutrition Center on the UC-Davis campus.  Eligible participants will be enrolled in the study for 15 consecutive days.

Participation involves eating a nutrient supplement that contains two adherence marker compounds daily for 10 days and collecting urine samples on 6 days over the course of the study. The adherence marker compounds are an FDA-approved food additive and a naturally occurring compound in grapes. 

To qualify for this study participants must:

  • be healthy non-pregnant, non-lactating women

  • be between 18-45 years of age

  • have a BMI between 18.5 and 25.0 kg/m2

  • have no history of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, liver disease, or gastrointestinal disease

Participants will receive:

  • Compensation for study completion, up to $120

Olive Oil Study

Men needed for Research Study

Scientists at UC Davis’ Department of Nutrition are conducting a study that examines the effects of olive oil polyphenols on cardiovascular health.

To participate in this research study, you must be willing to come in for 2 study visits that are at least one week apart. For each study visit, we will ask you to drink 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and donate a blood sample three times.

To qualify for this study, you must be:

  • 20-45 years of age

  • In good health

  • Not taking any medications, and are willing to stop all supplement use 6 weeks prior to and throughout the study period

Participants will receive:

  • Copies of standard laboratory results

  • Compensation for study completion, up to $165

Goji Berry Study

Men and Women between 45-65 years old needed for Research Study

Scientists at UC Davis’ Department of Nutrition are conducting a study on the effects of goji berry on macular health in healthy men and women between 45-65 years of age.

You must come to 3 study visits, 45 days apart, and consume goji berry or lutein and zeaxanthin supplement. One functional vision test will be conducted at each study visit.

To qualify for this study, you must be:

  • Male or female 45-65 years of age
  • In good health
  • With normal macular condition

Participants will receive:

  • Participants will receive up to $100 as compensation for their time.

Women and Sucrose-sweetened Beverages Study

Information about the Effects of Sucrose-Sweetened Beverage in African-American and Caucasian Women Study is given below.

People Are Consuming More Sugar

Scientists at the University of California, Davis are conducting a research study to determine what the effects of drinking 3 sugar-sweetened beverages each day has on a person´s metabolism.

We need healthy non-hispanic White and African-American women, ages 18-45, BMI range 25-35, who:

  • Are willing to drink 3 sweetened beverages each day for approximately 15 days
  • Are non-smokers and not taking thyroid, lipid-lowering, diabetes, depression or blood pressure medications
  • Have extra time to devote to helping us answer this important question

Participation in this study requires a significant time commitment:

  • The entire study lasts approximately 17 days, with experimental testing days lasting  approximately 16 days.
  • For portions of the study you will need to visit at Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) Clinical Research Center (CCRC) located at UC Davis Medical Center.
  • Two 4-hour visits at the beginning of the study
  • Two 4-hour visits at the end of the study
  • You will be compensated approximately $305 for completing the study.

Orange Juice and Sugar Intervention (OASIS) Study

Scientists at the University of California, Davis are conducting a research study to learn more about the health effects of drinking sugar-sweetened beverages compared with naturally-sweetened beverages.

Who can participate?

We are looking for healthy men and women who are between the ages 18-50 years old, with a BMI between the range of 20-35 kg/m2 and are non-smokers who:

  • Are willing to consume our study diet (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack) each day for approximately 7 weeks
  • Are willing to drink 3 sweetened beverages per day for approximately 5 weeks
  • Are willing to spend two sessions (6 hours each) at the Ragle Research Facility at the UC Davis campus, and two sessions (1 1/2 days) at the Touro University Translational Clinic (TUTC) in Vallejo, CA (transportation from Davis provided by staff) for experimental procedures

You will be compensated approximately $900 for completing the study. There will be no compensation for participation in screening or consenting procedures.

Metabolic Effects of Sugar/Aspartame Study (MESA Study)

People are consuming a lot of sugar

Scientists at the University of California, Davis are conducting a research study to determine the effects that drinking sweetened beverages with provided study meals each day has on a person's metabolism.

We need healthy men and women, ages 18-40, who:

  • Are willing to consume the breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided by the study staff each day for approximately 42 days.
  • Are willing to drink 3 sweetened beverages per day for approximately 56 days along with the provided study meals.
  • Are non-smokers and not taking thyroid, lipid-lowering, diabetes, depression or blood pressure medications.
  • Are willing to spend two sessions (6 hours each) at the Ragle Research Facility at the UC Davis days or 30 hours each) at the Touro University Translational Clinic campus, and two sessions (1 1/4 days in Vallejo, CA (transportation provided by staff)
  • Have extra time to devote to helping us answer this important question.

Participation in this study requires a significant time commitment:

  • The entire study lasts approximately 70 days.
  • You will need to spend time at our research facilities:
    • Ragle Research Facility at the UC Davis campus located in Davis, CA.
      • For 6 hours at the beginning of the study
      • For 6 hours at the middle of the study
    • Touro University Translational Clinic (TUTC) in Vallejo, CA (transport provided by staff).
      • For 1 1/4 days (30 hours) during the 6th week of the study
      • For 1 1/4 days (30 hours) during the 2nd week of the study
  • You will be compensated approximately $1,170 for completing the study. There will be no compensation for participation in screening or consenting procedures.
